I believe Bob Edgar was also a congressman in the 70's. He's a Methodist, Like George Bush. Like me – at least when my parents forced me to go to church – although I've had a much different and very much positive perception of Church folk since then, since realizing most of them actually aren't straightforward parrots of what seems is the particulairly American version of Christianity – the fire and brimstone thing of the 'angry Father' etc, which I think has become the default of what people think of when they think of Christianity and even religion in general, at least in the U.S. Reality is that many religious leaders break that mold, and are frequently ones who have to guide their congregations to think a little deeper than the Blowhard version of fear based devotion.
OK here's his bio.
I've seen him speak a couple of times, he's a great guy. Good that you posted this. Of course he's not a traitor. (I know it's irony, but..) In fact I think that to speak these things especially when it's not set within the very narrow 'marketable' alleyway of discourse that defines what we see and hear (and then discuss, act upon – then even becoming reality) then that truely is what 'Patriotism' is about – and also an element in the foundation of a funcitoning Democracy. Without people who are not afraid to speak out Democracy can't function.
God Bless the U.S. (and that's said as a PRAYER not a statement of fact)
