Powell Regrets 1973 U.S. Actions in Chile
WASHINGTON - When a student asked Secretary of State Colin Powell about the 1973 military coup in Chile, the retired general turned diplomat made no secret of his deep misgivings about the U.S. role in that upheaval.
Anyone remember how Bush appointed Kissenger as the head of a 9/11 investigation? I actually can't think of anyone more inappropriate and offensive for the role. That it took a number of 9/11 families kicking and screaming to get it to actually get it happen in the first place is unbelievable.

Crashed by Car
Electronic musician and arranger Brandon Reid Huey (b. 1972) traces his serious interest in music to an accidental lesson in harmonics when, as a child, he sang into the family piano and got lost in what happened next...

Cost of War
$1.1 billion: the amount our government is spending daily to fund the war on Iraq, according to www.costofwar.com. Read there to see why the current total is currently around $40 billion, and not the $20 billion that is usually cited.

Voices in the Wilderness Barred
Voices in the Wilderness just learned that:
a few hours ago... following a meeting between Iraq Peace Team members and representatives of the US Military's Civil Operations Center (CMOC), all Voices in the Wilderness members are banned from the Palestine Hotel, home not only to CMOC but also the international press corps. (See here for that story).
This came into effect yesterday after they issued the following press release:
Heavy-handed & Hopeless, The U.S. Military Doesn't Know What It's Doing In
Iraq Ramzi Kysia, 16 April 2003

Movies> Recommended> Daytrippers

So, you're a 29 year old aspiring moviemaker who survives as a nite-shift graphic designer. You happen to be pals with Steven Soderbergh and Nancy Tenanbaum though. One day, Steve and Nancy say to you, "If you could just think of something that could be done really cheaply, we will give you the money to make it." What would you do?
Well, if you were Greg Mottola, you would lock yourself in your apartment for four weeks and come up with a screenplay first draft to The Daytrippers. Having just finished reading the script, Nancy would lean in close to you and say, "This is exactly what we thought you should do," as Steve Soderbergh picks up the phone to make some calls.
Actually, the above scenario happened ten years ago, as apparently low-budget indies take much longer to produce. From the way Mottola describes it, the more money you throw at it, the less time it takes to make. Who would have thunk it? Well, that ten years was put to good use.
Its a nice slice-of-life where the cheap production only distracts on the lighting. Lots of snappy, fun cameos (the alimony-dodging dad was a favorite). When towards the end of the movie it is revealed that Eliza is a gradeschool teacher, the wife and I turned to each other and laughed at how Hope Davis nailed this personality type (oh come on. you know what I'm talking about). The emotional climax scene was difficult to watch thanks especially to Anne Meara. To be sure, Rita could have been played as a caricature, but like Doris Roberts' Marie from Everybody Loves Raymond she never quite lets you dismiss her as the harping nag you know she really is. Some pottymouth talk. Recommended.

Seattle Looter Condemns Iraqi Looter
Jason Frasier, 18, of Seattle loudly condemns Yasin Abdullah, shown here looting an air conditioner from the nearby Ministry of Electrocution in downtown Bagdhad on Thursday.
"Normally, I'm all for looting and all that crap like [wealth redistribution]", says Frasier, a copywriting intern with a Seattle software engineering firm. "During the Battle Of Seattle, I scored myself an X-Box, a cherry pair of Nikes, and enough snacks to last for, like, a month. But this guy in Baghdad...does he have any idea what freon does to the atmosphere? If he's that hot, he should move up here to the Northwest. I mean...do they even have electricity in his village?"
Unaware of Frasier's comments, Abdullah is not sure if he will keep the air conditioner for his family or try to sell it on Baghdad's burgeoning black market.
"During the 8 months that I was daily being tortured on my [genital region] by the Feyadeen dogs, the only thing that made it even slightly bearable was this wonderful air conditioner in the corner window. When the blessed Americans liberated my city, I knew right how to find it," Abdullah said.
Asked if he had a problem with the other looting going on in Baghdad, Abdullah replied, "I figured that after months of electrodes being attached to my [genital region] I kind of deserved this air conditioner."

37 girls (ages 5 & up) rescued from Cambodian sex slavery!
And now for a change?some spectacularly great news!
Here is an excerpt from an email update I received this weekend from the International Justice Mission:
"Thank God for a successful raid in Cambodia! IJM was able to
rescue 37 girls from forced prostitution with the aid of the local police
force. Thank God for providing immediate aftercare for all 37 girls.
Pray for the continued aftercare of those rescued and also for their healing
and the transformation of their spirits. Thank God also for the arrest of 13
perpetrators. Please pray for success in the case prosecutions to come."
And from the AP story in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, a few more lurid details:"At least 22 of the girls appear to be younger than 10, said Khut Sopheang, a
Municipal Court prosecutor. Nine girls, aged between six and nine, were
found in one house alone, a police officer said."Read the whole thing here. And while you're at it, strongly consider supporting the International Justice Mission. I cannot think of a more worthwhile use for money.

Photos From The Iraqi Dissident Hotel
ICQ Conversation between Vanderdreschd and javier ------------------------------------------------------- Vanderdreschd said : ugh, LGF has photos of the iraqi "morgue". How in the heck did Johnson get them so fast?! Pic of the 'execution log' (I assume) with the page turned to the poor sot with a bullet thru the head. Man. javier said : yeah - hey, NO BLOOD FOR OIL. javier said : but that's nothing compared to Bush's right wing death camps here in amerikkka Vanderdreschd said : ugh. javier said : as they say, the "lid is off the coffin" - literally, and everyone, INCLUDING THE EURO JEW HATING LEFT, gets to take a big frikkin WIFF. smells like death. javier said : it's kinda scary: we're gonna get a kinda of inspection of state that ol' BLIX never counted on... 'House of Horrors" mode. Vanderdreschd said : man. its only the first 2 weeks. THINK of what comes next when the interviews start. Vanderdreschd said : the photos, the eyewitness accounts to come--remember that stuff we waded through looking at that South African site... javier said : I have the links. you want to see it again? Preview of Iraq? Vanderdreschd said : uh, no thanks. Really don't need to see that again. javier said : i hear ya.

Victor Davis Hanson: another infuriating military historian
"If we thought Turkey’s recent turnabout was depressing, imagine a South Korea when that crisis heats up, as thousands in Seoul take to the street to protest our presence as they are hours away from being annihilated by North Korean artillery. As soon as possible we should begin discussions about carefully drawing down troops and relocating them far to the south to compose a “strategic reserve” as tens of thousands of wealthy brave South Korean teenagers assume their exclusive place on the front-line to protect their own motherland from Korean Stalinists."
So sarcastic! Yet soberingly true. Would that I be as grim and clear-eyed as this wiley old Machiavelli when I'm his age...read the rest... Read more...

Courageous LA Times Finally Exposes Jack-Booted Brutality Of Our Troops
British Royal Marine Sgt. Byron Hull gave a final warning to remain seated to Ghassan Atiyyah, show here attempting to obtain water for his sick child. Sgt. Hull then opened fire on the pair, suspending Atiyyah's bloodied and lifeless body in the air for several seconds from the sheer force of bullets fired from his SA80 Assult Rifle. Three other Iraqi civilians standing near to Atiyyah were also killed in the onslaught.
Well, not really. Actually, this is a photograph of a British soldier directing Iraqi civilians to take cover from Iraqi fire. It was altered to 'improve composition' by a LA Times photographer who...aw, heck...why don't I just let the editor of the LA Times explain why he fired this jackass...

Iraq Civilians Opinion by Masuda Sultan
As the civilian death toll in Iraq rises with the most recent killings in Hilla, south of Baghdad, gruesome pictures have hit the airwaves and the Internet, showing the faces of the "dozens of smashed corpses" of women and children that the Red Cross spokesman Roland Huguenin-Benjamin has described as lying lifeless in Hilla hospital. These are images that no one can bear to see, no matter what our personal feelings may be about the war. The latest round of coalition bombing comes only a day after the tragic massacre of women and children at an Iraqi checkpoint, prompting a US Army captain to shout at his platoon: "You just killed (expletive) a family because you didn't fire a warning shot soon enough!"
As the casualties mount, it is clear that this has become a war of pictures and stories that American networks and Arab and European news agencies are frantically churning out, each attempting to discredit the other. An appropriate and sincere US response to these civilian casualties is critical and the time for that response is now. We must show the world that we do care for these innocent lives, by calling for independent investigations and humanitarian assistance for the victims and their families. The US must not wait for criticism or public embarrassment to snowball before it takes action.
