Hubris and Cheney

When I was a 17-year-old freshman at the Cornell College of Architecture, I was required to take an elective in the College of Liberal Arts every semester. I suppose this policy was intended to make us little brutes “better-rounded,” but it had unintended consequences, at least for me.

I took Philosophy 101, and in it I was introduced to Plato’s “Apologia” (supposedly Socrates’, but written by his pupil, Plato). I thought this was pretty hot stuff and proceeded to read all the writings of Plato I could get my hands on. Then, to the consternation of my professor, a liberal academician of his (the early ’50s) era, I wrote a paper praising the works of Plato and espousing the very principles for which Socrates was asked to drink the hemlock. “The Need for an Intellectual Aristocracy,” I think I titled it, and I was roundly (and rightly) chastised by my professor for falling for such a line of bunkum.

I forgot the incident and Socrates’ indiscretion until some 40 years later when I read I. F. Stone’s “The Trial of Socrates.” Socrates, I learned, had been the darling of the aristocracy precisely because his teachings lent philosophical legitimacy to their own oligarchic impulses and had thus had a hand in fomenting three coups against the government of Athens in the last ten years of his life, prior to his suicide by popular demand.

We in the United States have fallen victim to another such attempted takeover. Unfortunately, history repeats itself but always with enough of a twist that present dangers are seldom recognized as having historical precedent. Today we are suffering from a new dementia. The connections with Athens in 399 B.C. are tenuous, but I see history repeating itself nonetheless.

We have Cheney instead of Alcibiades, but the same intellectual opportunism is at work. “The people are too stupid to make decisions,” they cry, “so we’ll make them for them” (and a pile of money in the process). We have a government not “of the people, by the people” but of Beltway “we-know-betters” who are smart but not wise, who think every thought extruded from their tiny minds to be pearls of wisdom, and a captive president perfectly designed (stupid but aggressive) to put their hare-brained policies into action.

There’s a fine old word for this, a Greek one as a matter of fact: “hubris.” In Greek mythology, hubris was the first step to self-destruction. Our technology is better, but we are no wiser than the ancient Greeks. We should listen to them.

IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT.

Forwarded emails from relatives alert. They're allways of a similar theme. I could waste my time responding and getting worked up about this but... sheesh. Hard not to plot a response to the 20+ mostly family members he forwarded it to. Uugh. But why bother. No wonder this country is so screwed up.

Anyway here's a chat about this gem: http://skittish.org/hoaxes/archives/000095.html Subject: From Tampa Bay  Newspaper

Will we still be the  Country of choice and still be America if we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from other  countries that came to live in America  because it is the Country of Choice??? Think about it . . .

All I have to say is, when will they do something about  MY RIGHTS? I celebrate Christmas, but because it isn't celebrated by everyone,  we can no longer say Merry Christmas. Now it has to be Season's Greetings. It's  not Christmas vacation, it's Winter Break. Isn't it amazing how this winter  break ALWAYS occurs over the Christmas holiday? We've gone so far the other way,  bent over backwards to not offend anyone, that I am now being offended. But it  seems that no one has a problem with that.

This says it all!

This is an editorial  written by an American citizen, published in a Tampa newspaper. He did quite a  job; didn't he? Read on, please!

IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT.

I am tired of  this nation worrying about whether we
are offending some individual or their  culture.
Since the terrorist attacks on Sept.  11,
we have experienced a  surge in patriotism
by the majority of Americans.
However, the dust from the attacks had barely  settled
when the "politically  correct" crowd began complaining about
the possibility that our patriotism  was offending others. Read more...

But it's the ACLU that GOD Hates - He Told Me So

Pipeline Plan Leads Back to High-profile Investing Group
By Robert Trigaux
St. Petersburg Times

Monday 19 April 2004

A northern Virginia power company whose chairman has longstanding ties to the Bush White House and this state's public pension fund last week received swift approval by Gov. Jeb Bush and the state Cabinet for a pipeline project that would bring natural gas from the Bahamas to South Florida.

The company is AES Corp., an $8.5-billion revenue corporation whose chairman is Richard Darman. For those not up on the Washington scene back in the 1980s, Darman rose to become the high-profile budget director in the first Bush administration.

Darman was intimately involved with former President George Bush's promise - later broken - immortalized in the line, Read my lips: no new taxes. Breaking that vow was a major factor in Bush's election loss to Bill Clinton in 1992.

Darman moved on from government. But not too far. In addition to his recent role as chairman of AES, Darman has served since 1993 as part of the senior management team and adviser of the Carlyle Group of Washington.

It's a business tale of cozy ties that this brief column can only begin to describe.

One of the world's largest private investing firms, Carlyle was started by former Bush administration and other former senior federal officials. Its initial focus: buying and reviving troubled defense companies. Carlyle was quickly and immensely successful, thanks to the firm's ability to win federal contracts.

GOD SAVE AMERICA

Just one of many charming emails I have recieved lately.

ACLU Creates New LOGO

The ACLU has a preoccupation with Secularism, which includes support for homosexual criminality, i.e., gay marriage, legalization of pedophile acts (NAMBLA), and their persecution of individuals who freely practice their religious faith, whether it be in the marketplace or a government enclave. It is what inspired them to adopt the most hated, disgusting and sacrilegious symbol known to man . . .the PENTAGRAM (PENTACLE), trademark of the Beast of Beasts, aka, SATAN, THE DEVIL, BEEZLEBUB, so described in the Bible and black magic writings.

So it is that there will no longer be any doubt as to what the ACLU represents. All you will have to do is look at their new LOGO. This insult to GODs laws may be forgiven one day; but not before this organization of the Occult is dismantled, along with its mentor, SATAN. The Sooner the Better.

Bush's Warfare State

by Barbara Ehrenreich; The Progressive ; March 30, 2004

Here's one way our President proposes to "support our troops": According to his 2005 budget, the extra pay our soldiers receive for serving in combat zones--about $150 a month--will no longer count against their food stamp eligibility. This budget provision, if approved, should bring true peace of mind to our men and women on the front lines. From now on, they can dodge bullets in Iraq with the happy assurance that their loved ones will not starve as a result of their bravery.

Shut Up, War Critics

by Robert Fisk; UK Independent; April 11, 2004

Just shut up. That's the new foreign policy line of our masters. When Senator Edward Kennedy dubbed Iraq "George Bush's Vietnam", US Secretary of State Colin Powell told him to be "a little more restrained and careful" in his comments. I recall that when the US commenced its bombing of Afghanistan, the White House spokesman claimed that some journalists were "asking questions that the American people wouldn't want asked". Back in the early 1980s, when I reported on the Iranian soldiers on a troop train to Tehran who were coughing Saddam's mustard gas out of their lungs in blood and mucus, a Foreign Office official told my then editor on The Times that my dispatch was "not helpful". In other words, stop criticising our ally, Saddam. Read more...

drivingvotes.org

From an email forwarded by Laura Grunberger Hey everyone,

A friend of mine is starting a very clever grassroots voting project: He and his friends have created an organization called Driving Votes, which is organizing people to caravan down to swing states and register voters for the upcoming presidential election.  The website just went live today at http://www.drivingvotes.org/  Look at the site, and if you're at all interested in getting involved with it, you should email Leighton at lawood@berkeley.edu.  If you canít get involved but agree with the idea of the organization, please email this URL out to as many people as you know, and tell them to check it out.  It's really crucial that as many people as possible hear about the group as soon as possible.  Thanks!

Opening Day

from the NYT, April 6, 2004: "When he sprinted out of the home-team dugout at Busch Stadium here wearing a Cardinals jacket, he drew a cheer from the stands exceeding even that given a few minutes earlier to Stan Musial, perhaps St. Louis's most revered Hall of Famer. The president then threw an arguable strike to Mike Matheny, the Cardinals' catcher."

Chili for chili dogs

mailed by est posted by pibor doo, you gotta get on it! post dat shit!

CHILI FOR CHILI DOGS

1 tablespoon olive oil
1/4 pound pancetta, chopped 1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, smashed
1/2 red bell pepper, finely chopped
2 dried ancho chilies, soaked in hot water for 15 minutes, seeded and chopped
1 pound ground beef
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1 tablespoon chopped oregano
2 plum (roma) tomatoes, seeded and chopped
1/4 cup tomato sauce
1/2 cup beef stock (broth if you must)
1/2 cup beer
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar.

1. Warm olive oll and pancetta in large pan over medium heat. Cook until pancetta has rendered its fat and pieces start turning crispy. Remove with slotted spoon. Add onion, garlic, pepper and chilis to pan. Cook until onions.are soft and translucent, about 10 minutes. Spread beef in pan, and brown on both sides. Next, mince the beef with spatula while cooking until no longer pink.

2. Stir in pancetta, chili powder, cumin, paprika, allspice and oregano. Add tomatoes and tomato sauce, then stir in broth and beer. Simmer for 35 to 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, more often at the end. Chili is done when liquid has reduced and sauce just coats ingredients. Stir in vinegar and season to taste with salt. Shut off heat, and rewarm gently when ready to spoon on hot dogs. Best when prepared a day in advance.

Yield: Enough for 8 hot dogs.
